There are no conservative groups on campus and I don't blame anyone for not wanting to start one due to the backlash and social exclusion that would take place. The indoctrinated students and faculty care about diversity of every sort (including who you take to the bedroom for some reason???) except the intellectual one.
Wonderful university, is very liberal (it's a liberal arts school y'all like what did you think) however there are many very vocal conservatives who also thrive here. Honestly don't know why Wesley is so angry about it there was a man who would come and protest the gays and abortion every few weeks. No voice was actually unheard, but we all have different experiences in college.
If the orientation process contains political views then it is obvious that the University is designed to make you think a certain way. If you do not agree with the far left opinion you are labeled a racist (or some other buzzword). If you voted for Trump, racist. If you are white, you are inherently racist because of your race and no I am not kidding that they don't see the irony in that statement.
If I could do it over I would go to a University that cares about intellectual diversity and not so much what your race is or who you have sexual relations with, frankly because I'm not a racist or bigot. I want to listen to all opinions from all students to decide for myself what I think is right. I DID NOT have that option here and neither will you. Choose wisely.
The faculty and orientation leaders may tell you that the University does not have these policies in place, which may in fact be true on paper, but take it from a non-republican, Libertarian white male who didn't vote for Trump, I am considered an enemy by many who don't even know me because I have a different opinion and have expressed it. I am confident that my opinions are help by large portions of society and am concerned by the backlash I have faced at a University that is supposed to promote higher education.
I came to Otterbein University in 2013 and will be graduating in the Fall this year with a degree in business management. Over the years I have been here, it has slowly devolved into a predatory echo-chamber where only one opinion is thought, taught, and allowed.
Straight white male? Forget about being allowed to have an opinion because you are a racist sexist homophobic privileged bigot who needs to shut up and listen to anyone with a different skin color, sexual orientation, or who identify as one of the unlimited other genders that aren't male or female. Believe me multiple loud and proud organizations on campus will yell at you about if you don't recognize these newly invented and unlimited terms.
In conclusion,
There is definitely a lack of communications but this seems to be a theme for all colleges/universities.
Great school people are very nice and friendly
Helpful staff, wonderful learning environment, sweet town. The service department tends to lack, my roommate and I had to wait 1 1/2 months for them to change a light bulb in our dorm and they don't seem to feel it is there job to fix greek life's dishwashers and laundry machines even if the school owns the houses. Same goes for back porches. The environment of the school and the willingness to help from all the other departments make up for it. Professors are actually willing to help (well some) and the general concensus is that they want all of their students to succeed and are more than willing to help you do so. This university will always have a soft spot in my heart and I miss everyone and everything there dearly.
Wonderful theater department however there is a clear totem poll when it comes to breaking down the department. This is also true for Greek life, don't get me wrong I loved being with my sisters, but there is a totem poll. Professors are typically very open to helping you although like all campuses some are better than other.
You are immediately indoctrinated during the orientation period with many far left opinions, one of the most prominent being white privilege. This has never made sense to me because I thought college was supposed to promote the idea of exchange of very controversial opinions from all sides through free speech to advance knowledge in society on the free market of ideas where the bad ideas die off (but are not suppressed) and the good ideas advance due to human reason.
I would not recommend anyone go here but especially so if you are white and going into the humanities. You will be shamed for your race / who you like to take to the bedroom(because of cis-heteronormativity look it up) / your gender / ect.... and if you don't give into that shame, well, good luck dealing with the backlash. You couldn't pay me to go to this place for another year. Don't pay for yourself or your kids to become indoctrinated life long far left wingers.
Lived on campus for a year. Sororities scream or "chant" all night long. Police do nothing. Over the course of a year, I had one good roommate and two awful roomates. One of the roomates had a serious drug problem and her much older boyfriend staying in the room. My RA did nothing but say " just don't let me hear about it". Residence life would not let me switch rooms. I could not get an apartment off campus because I was not 22 yet. On top of all this, the nursing program/department was an unorganized mess. Professors were always on a different page and the online struggle never worked. I transferred and have much happier elsewhere.
